So often I hear busy parents of college bound teens express frustration at the search for scholarships.
They often share THREE main concerns:
- When they search the term “scholarships”, Google returns a billion results.
- When they do find scholarships they seem to be scams.
- They have heard that only kids with high test scores and straight A’s get scholarships and their child has neither. All of the above are valid concerns. This is why I teach college bound families how to search for scholarships in the Get The Acceptance Letter Academy.
One way to get more productive results from a google search is to make it more specific. For instance, instead of searching for “scholarships”, search for “Scholarships for high school seniors”.
Worried about whether the scholarship is a scam? Look to see if you have ever heard of the organization sponsoring it, and how low the barrier to entry is. For example, if all they require is your name and email address that is a red flag.
Regarding test scores and GPA’s, there are lots of scholarships for students that are not “Merit Based”, meaning grades and GPA are not considered.
I help families find them all the time!
Here is my bonus tip for you. Try searching at this link.
Search more than 8,000 scholarships, fellowships, grants, and other financial aid award opportunities. You can:
- Look through the whole list of scholarships below, arranged in order of closest deadline
- Narrow your list with “Search by keyword.” Enter a keyword about the type of award you’re looking for
- Use the filters to see only awards for certain award types, locations, level of study, and more
