Episode 45: How GPA & Test Scores Help You Get Scholarships

Let’s talk about how GPA and test scores can lead to scholarships. The first thing I want to tell you is a truth: at the end of the webinars that I give usually when there is a Q&A, one of the first questions I get is usually from a nervous parent whose student is not showing up well on tests, or doesn’t “test well,” or who doesn’t have great grades.

I have to tell you the truth: the Cadillac of scholarships. the one that people  think about most. The “full ride” where the college pays for room, board, tuition, and books is usually reserved (that’s an institutional scholarship
given by the the college)  for people with extraordinary test scores and extraordinary GPAs.

But on the bright side there are literally thousands, and I do mean
thousands of scholarships that are merit-based, — which means that they have a GPA and a a test score cut off — from colleges that don’t have that
stringent standard. I have seen many many scholarships that ask for a 3.5, a 3.0, a 2.5, a 2.2,  or a 1090 on the SAT; an 1100 on the SAT. “At least a 21 on the ACT;” “at least an 18 on the ACT,” etc.

All of these scores that I just recounted to you are average scores and in some circles below average.

In  Episode 45 of the Get The Acceptance Letter podcast, How GPA & Test Scores Help You Get Scholarships  (which is available wherever you listen to podcasts) I go on to tell you MORE about how you can find scholarships from colleges and how to apply for them.

”My daughter is finishing undergrad at Hampton, and we still needed funds to cover costs. Treasure’s scholarship bank resulted in her winning The Brown Mae Healthcare scholarship ($1,000.00), The Luther Vandross Scholarship ($2,500.00) The James M. & Erma T. Freemont Foundation Scholarship Program (10,000.00!).”
